Autoimmune encephalitis comprises a group of immune-mediated neurological disorders caused by autoantibodies targeting neuronal and synaptic proteins. The dysfunction of these molecules disrupts brain circuits and leads to symptoms that may include psychiatric manifestations, seizures, movement disorders, cognitive impairment, and autonomic dysfunction. These conditions are often triggered by tumours or viral infections and may involve genetic susceptibility. Early diagnosis is critical, as timely immunotherapy can result in substantial improvement or even full recovery. Beyond their clinical relevance, these diseases offer a unique window into the fundamental mechanisms that regulate brain function in health and disease.
Dalmau’s group focuses on identifying novel neuronal and glial antigens and on clarifying the molecular mechanisms by which autoantibodies alter synaptic structure and function. Using cellular and animal models, the team investigates the interplay between innate and adaptive immunity in neurological pathology. They are also developing innovative therapeutic approaches, including synaptic receptor modulation and CAR T cell–based strategies, with the aim of advancing precision treatments in neuroimmunology.
