With a PhD in Immunology from the National University of Cordoba (UNC, Argentina), his research focuses on the development of innovative therapeutic strategies for cancer and autoimmune diseases. His work has made it possible to identify and characterise the role played by galectins, proteins capable of modulating the immune response and promoting mechanisms associated with tumour growth and the resolution of inflammatory conditions. He began his career at the UNC's Faculty of Chemical Sciences, following a postdoctoral fellowship at the “José de Martín” Clinical Hospital (Buenos Aires), and since 2007 has been Head of the Glycomedicine Laboratory at the Institute of Biology and Experimental Medicine (IBYME), a position he continues to hold alongside his appointment at the CaixaResearch Institute.
Research into immunoregulatory circuits mediated by lectin–glycan interactions that govern the homeostasis of the immune system and play a role in the pathogenesis of neoplastic, inflammatory and infectious diseases, with the aim of developing innovative therapeutic strategies designed to modulate these circuits.
